Conservation Authority Acquires Another Property for Habitat Plan Western Riverside County Regional Conservation Authority latest acquisition is a 40.27 acre parcel in the Southwest
area of the County on the Santa Rosa Plateau.
Santa Rosa Plateau, CA — This acquisition is located between Via Volcano and Calle De Mucho, south of Tenaja Road on the Santa Rosa Plateau. This acquisition is part of the core linkage between the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological reserve to the east of the property with the Cleveland National Forest to the west of the property along the Tenaja Road Corridor.
Site surface vegetation on the property consists of Coastal Sage Scrub, Mixed Oak Woodlands, and Non-Native Grasslands.
Wildlife observed on the site is typical of the mixed sage scrub, woodland and grassland habitats. Species observed in
a recent wildlife survey included: the Western fence lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis), Turkey vulture (Cathartes
aura), American kestrel (Falco sparverius), Mourning dove (Zenaida macroura), Anna's hummingbird (Calypte
anna), Acorn woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus), Black phoebe (Sayornis nigricans), Oak titmouse (Baeolophus inornatus), Wrentit (Chamaea fasciata), Northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), White-crowned
sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys), Chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina), Savannah sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis), California towhee (Pipilo crissalis), Desert cottontail (Sylvilagus audubonii),
Coyote (Canis latrans), and Mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus).
This property will provide an important linkage for species that travel between the Santa Rosa Plateau and the Cleveland
National Forest.
The property consists of approximately 40.27 acres and continues the efforts of the RCA to develop a
reserve system within Western Riverside County.
