Temecula Mountain Acquisition
Location: East of Interstate 15 and East of Rainbow Canyon Road and
approximately 3/4 of a mile north of the South County line in the unincorporated area of Riverside County in
the Temecula Valley.

Species for Conservation:
Species for conservation in this area plan subunit include: Coopers hawk, downy woodpecker,
least Bells vireo, loggerhead shrike, southwestern willow flycatcher, tree swallow,
white-tailed kite, yellow-breasted chat, yellow warbler, bobcat, Los Angeles pocket mouse, and mountain lion.
Importance:
The Temecula Mountain property consists of approximately 88.67 acres and is located east
of Interstate 15 and east of Rainbow Canyon Road, south of the City of Temecula in the
unincorporated area of Riverside County. This property was acquired by the Trust for Public
Land with a combination of state and federal grant funding and then donated to
the RCA on July 21, 2011 for long term management purposes.
The property is not located within any cells; however the property is located within a
designated Special Linkage Area, pursuant to the Western Riverside County Multiple
Species Habitat Conservation Plan (Western Riverside County MSHCP). The Western Riverside
County MSHCP targets the conservation of 153,000 acres of additional lands for preservation
of wildlife and plant life. The subject site is located immediately north and adjacent to
conserved land owned by the Bureau of Land Management.
The Temecula Mountain property contains important biological resources, including
nearly 20 acres of Woodland and Forest habitat as well as chaparral plant habitat.
Animal species likely to occur on the property include Coopers hawk, downy woodpecker,
least Bells vireo, loggerhead shrike, southwestern willow flycatcher, tree swallow,
white-tailed kite, yellow-breasted chat, yellow warbler, bobcat, Los Angeles pocket
mouse, mountain lion and western pond turtle.
Preservation of this plant community and animal species meets the objectives identified for
Federal Grant Number E-20-HL-3.
Wildlife and Habitat Value:
The property is located within a designate Special Linkage Area and is connected to other
conserved lands west of Interstate 15 via Constrained Linkage 14, which includes the
Temecula Creek. Conserved lands in the vicinity of the property include the Santa Margarita
Ecological Reserve managed by San Diego State University, west of
Interstate 15 and the Bureau of Land Management lands located south of the subject property.
