146 Project Helps Local Girl Scout Raise the Bar and Earn a Gold Star

When you think of Girl Scouts, what comes to mind? Leadership, adventure, and the making of tomorrow’s changemakers and of course, those iconic, crave-worthy cookies that bring a smile to everyone. From discovering new museums to camping at a state park all weekend, there are as many ways to discover adventure as there are Girl Scouts. Take Katie from the Girl Scouts San Gorgonio Chapter as an example—her journey demonstrates how dedication and passion can make a lasting impact on the community.

In partnership with the Western Riverside County Regional Conservation Authority (RCA), Katie implemented the 146 Project, aimed at educating youth about habitat conservation, the variety of animal and plant species, and the importance of preserving open space in western Riverside County. This Project is not only a testament to her commitment but also an exciting opportunity for young people to learn about environmental stewardship.

The Gold Award is recognized as the highest achievement in Girl Scouts; an honor earned only by 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts. As part of the process, girl scouts must identify an issue, investigate the issue thoroughly, get help and build a team, create a plan, present the plan and gather feedback, take action, and educate and inspire.

Efforts for the project began in 2022 when Katie approached staff with a plan to design and implement a “Fun Patch” program as part of her Gold Award. Katie spent countless hours working with RCA staff to develop and implement an education program that encourages young people to connect with nature, discover land conservation efforts, and learn about the 146 native animal and plant species protected by the MSHCP.

The program is open to students kindergarten through eighth grade. Participants will visit one of eight habitat preserves and complete a series of grade specific activities to test their knowledge and record their participation. Upon completion, students will be eligible to receive a 146 fun patch and a certificate of completion.

This past June, Katie was honored with the Girl Scout Gold Award through the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council. Thanks to Katie’s efforts, the 146 Project is available to youth across western Riverside County and will encourage environmental stewardship among the leaders of our future generations.
