New 71/91 Interchange Improves Travel and Supports Wildlife Movement

The 71/91 interchange in Corona is a vital connection for travelers navigating between Riverside, Orange, and San Bernardino counties. This area isn’t just important for motorists; it also serves as a crucial corridor for wildlife, given its proximity to the Cleveland National Forest, Chino Hills State Park, and the Santa Ana River.

On June 21, the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) opened the new eastbound 91 to northbound 71 direct connector as part of the 71/91 Interchange Project. The new connector is making travel easier and safer for commuters and wildlife alike.

Construction on the 71/91 interchange began in January 2023, with several protective measures in place to safeguard sensitive habitats identified for conservation by the MSHCP. For instance, crews ensured that drainage culverts near the Santa Ana River remained open to allow safe passage for coyotes, bobcats, and other wildlife. This attention to environment helps reduce the risks of inbreeding and vehicle-animal collisions.

The newly constructed two-lane direct connector replaces the former single-lane loop connector. Additionally, the eastbound 91 Green River Rd. on-ramp has been realigned to provide direct access to the new northbound 71 connector, as well as the eastbound 91 general purpose lanes.

This vital infrastructure project was a covered activity under the MSHCP. This new interchange is another milestone in a series of critical transportation projects that benefit from the MSHCP’s permitting process.
