The Delhi Sands flower-loving fly is the only fly ever listed under the Endangered Species Act. It lives nowhere else on Earth except a small patch of sandy soil in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, and only about 2 to 3 percent of that habitat is left.
This open space in the Jurupa Hills area of Jurupa Valley was conserved to protect the fly and the other wildlife that depend on the Delhi Sands dunes. Over time, shrubs have moved into the open sandy areas the fly needs. We need your help clearing them out.
What you’ll be doing
This is hands-on, physical work. Volunteers will team up in small groups to pull large shrubs out of the dunes. You will receive instructions on site, and all tools are provided. Expect to walk 1 to 2 miles over uneven dirt terrain.
What to bring and wear
- Long pants and closed-toe shoes (sneakers or boots) are required.
- Long sleeves, a hat, and sunscreen are recommended.
- Bring water and any snacks you’ll want during the event.
- Gloves are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own.
Pizza lunch is provided for all volunteers at the end of the event. Ready to help? Register using the form at the bottom of this page. There is no restroom on site, so plan accordingly. The event happens rain or shine and volunteers will be required to sign participation waivers.
